Cat Licking Itself Bald May Indicate a Flea Infestation

By: Dr. Nor-Alimah Rahman | noralimah@upm.edu.my

According to Dr. Nor-Alimah Rahman, a Veterinary Officer at the University Veterinary Hospital (UVH), grooming is a normal behaviour in cats. However, excessive licking that leads to hair loss or skin damage may indicate an underlying health problem. Common causes include flea infestations, allergies, pain in specific body areas, stress, and boredom. Owners should be alert to behavioural changes such as reduced activity, loss of appetite, or frequent licking of a particular area. Diagnosis is made through physical examination and assessment of the cat’s medical history. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include flea control medications or further diagnostic investigations. To prevent recurrence, owners are advised to maintain a clean environment, provide regular flea prevention treatments, and ensure their cats’ emotional well-being.
