SERDANG, 9 April – The University Veterinary Hospital (UVH), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organised a “Kursus Pengendalian Bahan Psikotropik” as part of its monthly internal training for April 2026, aimed at strengthening staff understanding of controlled substance management procedures in veterinary services.

The course was conducted to enhance staff awareness and compliance with procedures for handling psychotropic substances, covering aspects such as procurement, storage, usage, documentation, and disposal in accordance with the Poisons (Psychotropic Substances) Regulations 1989. This approach is essential to ensure that all processes are carried out systematically, safely, and in line with current legal requirements.

In addition, the programme emphasised the standardisation of documentation and work procedures among staff involved, thereby reducing the risk of non-compliance, medication management errors, and safety issues. Adherence to these guidelines is also seen to enhance the integrity of psychotropic substance management at the hospital level.

The course was conducted by UVH Pharmacist, Ms Nur Syasya Fasihah Mohd Faizal Nizam Lee, who provided a comprehensive briefing covering definitions, policies, handling procedures at user units, as well as disposal procedures and incident management as presented in the programme slides.

The programme involved the participation of approximately 30 individuals, including veterinary officers and related staff. The organisation of this course is viewed as a proactive step in strengthening operational efficiency and ensuring that psychotropic substance management at UVH is carried out in an integrated and effective manner.
